Project Detail

Replacement Horse Tram Depot to replace the original dilapidated 1902 building.

Excel Group undertook the construction of steel frame and masonry building, providing an updated Horse Tram maintenance and storage facility, staff offices and training facility and visitors ticket hall.

In addition to modern construction materials and techniques, the deployment of traditional trades and a patient approach were necessary to acheive the Architect’s historically sensitive aesthetic.

The proximity to the cliff face, open culverts, formation of service pits into rock and dealing with spoil contaminated with over a hundred years of engineering activities provided technical and logistical challenges.

Ensuring the operators and patrons of the adjacent public house, neighbouring residential properties and those visitor using the fully-operational public terminus for both the horse trams and Manx Electric railway were able to enjoy unimpeded access further provided logistical challenges.
